PLACES OF INTEREST:
AGRA
Agra is an ancient city on the bank of Yamuna
River in India, within the state of Uttar Pradesh having three World Heritage
Sites. It achieved prominence as the capital of the Mughal sovereigns from 1526
to 1658 and remains a major tourist destination because of its many splendid
Mughal-era buildings, most notably the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri. The city was fortified by Badal Singh
ca 1475, whose Fort, Badalgarh stood near the site of the present Red Fort. Agra
was a capital of the Lodi kingdom, defeated by the first Mughal Emperor, Babar.
The Mughals also began to use it as a capital.
Agra's importance grew during the reigns of
Akbar, Jehangir and Shah Jahan, and became a major center of art, culture,
commerce and learning. These emperors undertook major building projects.
KHAJURAHO
One of the most popular tourist
destinations in India, Khajuraho has the largest group of medieval Hindu
temples, famous for their erotic sculpture. The name Khajuraho is derived from
the Hindi word khajur meaning date palm.
The city was once the religious
capital of the Chandela Rajputs, a Hindu dynasty that ruled this part of India
from the 10th to the 12th centuries. The Khajuraho temples were built over a
span of
a hundred years, from 950 to 1050.
The whole area was enclosed by a wall with eight gates, each flanked by two
golden palm trees. There were originally over 80 Hindu temples, of which only 22
now stand in a reasonable state of preservation, scattered over an area of about
8 square miles (21 km²).
The temples of Khajuraho are an
example of religion laced with erotica. They are fine examples of Indian
architectural styles that have gained popularity due to their salacious
depiction of the traditional way of life during medieval times. They were
rediscovered only during the 20th century and the jungles had taken a toll on
some of the monuments.
The Khajuraho group of monuments
has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
BANDHAVGARH NATIONAL PARK
Bandhavgarh National Park, named after
Bandhavgarh Fort, is situated in Central India and was formerly a Royal hunting
reserve of the princely state of Rewa where the first White Tiger in the wild
was ever found. The Park is situated in 405 square kilometres of mixed forest.
The core area of the park is fairly small with a fragile ecology but it supports
such wildlife as the Chital (Spotted Deer), Sambar deer, Muntjak (Barking Deer),
Nilgai (Blue Bull), Chowsingha (Four-horned Antelope), Wild Boar, Leopard, Dhole
(Wild Dog) and of course Tiger. Bird life also abounds with over 275 species of
bird such as hornbills, orioles, parakeets, peacocks, and eagles.
KANHA NATIONAL PARK
Situated in central India in the Satpura Hill
ranges, Kanha Tiger Reserve offers without a doubt, India's finest Tiger
viewing. Spread over 1945 square kilometres with a core area of just 940 square
kilometres, the grasslands and deciduous forests also support other mammals such
as Barasingha, Chital, Muntjac (Swamp, Spotted and Barking Deer), Sambar, Common
Langur and Rhesus Monkeys, Wild Boar, Asiatic Jackal, three of India's four
lowland antelopes, Nilgai, Four-horned Antelope (Chowsingha) and Blackbuck, and
occasionally Leopard, Gaur (Indian Bison), Sloth Bear, Wolf and Dhole (Wild
Dog). In fact Kanha is noted for the last remaining population of hard-ground
Barasingha,.
PENCH NATIONAL PARK
Pench National Park is a part
of the Project Tiger network of special reserves. The Reserve is located in the
southern reaches of the Satpura hill range in the Madhya Pradesh State of India.
The terrain is undulating, with most of the area covered by small hills, steeply
sloping on the sides. The description of its natural beauty, richness in flora
and fauna has appeared in numerous wildlife books dating back to the 17th
century. Books written in the 19th and early 20th century by famous naturalists
like Captain J. Forsyth and Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book explicitly present the
detailed panorama of nature’s abundance in this tract. The forest type is
southern tropical dry deciduous teak and southern tropical mixed deciduous
forest with other species of shrubs, trees and climbers.
