The first South African Women Diver to be inducted intoThe Women Divers Hall of Fame along with Lauren Hutton.A gala event at the Sheraton Meadowlands Hotel in Secaucus, New Jersey on March 24, 2007 was host to the Beneath the Sea (BTS) Awards Banquet. South African diver, Debbie Smith was the first South African women to be officially inducted into WDHOF – WOMENS DIVERS HALL OF FAME. The Women Divers Hall of Fame™ (WDHOF) is an international non-profit professional honor society whose member contributions span a wide variety of fields including: The Arts, Science, Medicine, Sports, Exploration, Marine Archeology, Media, Service, Dive Training and Education, Safety, Business, Marine Environment and Conservation, Free Diving, Commercial Diving, and Military Diving. At the WDHOF Award Ceremony, each new 2007 WDHOF Member was presented with an official WDHOF certificate and the unique WDHOF gold pin designed by world famous jewelry designer, Norma Wellington. This year's WDHOF awards ceremony was an extraordinary event, attended by numerous diving celebrities and in attendance was Madam Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, President of the Republic of the Philippines. The WDHOF recognizes women divers who have made outstanding contributions to the exploration, understanding, safety and enjoyment of our underwater world. in 1986, Debbie's passion and dedication have led her into assisting top researchers in shark awareness and reef conservation. As a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer (MSDT) Instructor, she has been instrumental in the complete setting up of top dive centers at exclusive resorts. The most noted resort is North Island.in Seychelles in the Indian Ocean Islands. From mapping and naming sites to full operational status. Both have won top international awards. Debbie has written and had published articles on diving with great white sharks and is the founding member of an ecotourism company.
